What a Year, What a Day!

January 19th, 2007

We’ve spent the day editing, proofing, reviewing and testing two new online classes: Lisa Bearnson’s “A Pocketful of Memories” and Joey Whitaker’s “What A Year.” Both classes have so many fun ideas for scrapbooking an entire year’s worth of photos and memories, and the projects are amazing. We’ve been inspired just working on the class materials – we’re so excited to see it all come together. Meagan is even scraplifting Joey’s design template ideas to create her baby’s first year album. Registration just opened for both classes. We can’t wait to see what people think!

Lot’s of conference calls and web meetings today. Here’s Meagan making sure everything is ready on the web site. All in a day’s work!

Going Cruisin’

January 22nd, 2007

One of the best things about working for Creating Keepsakes is preparing for events and traveling to new locations! Here we are helping Lisa get classes prepared for a cruise to Hawaii. Aside from that we have a great team that organizes everything from the class schedule to class packets! Look for one of us at an event. We are excited to meet you! Emily

Funny Travel Stories

January 23rd, 2007

A few years ago, we started a tradition of answering a question during our meals at the event. Someone would pose a question and everyone would answer it. We got to know everyone much faster. We’ve kept this tradition during meals at the event but we also have the CKC team answer a question during our team meetings. It keeps things interesting not to mention we have a little fun. We thought it might be fun to answer a question for you: What is one of your worst or funniest traveling experiences? Here are a few of the CKC team stories. We hope you enjoy.

-The CKC Team
From David and Marie:
It seems like we always have someone lose his or her luggage at our Charlotte convention. I lost mine in 2005. Mike lost his luggage in 2006. Nothing like getting a call at 3 a.m. to let you know your luggage is ready. Charlotte always seems to have a bit of fun with no exception to this year. Mike, Marie, and I (David) headed off to the airport at 5 a.m. in the morning. We followed our maps and ended up at a military part of the airport.

We turned around and managed to find a sign pointing to the airport…too bad we were stuck at a light for 5 minutes. We managed to make it past the light and made it to the airport. As we approached the rental car agency, we noticed that the gates we closed. There were a few cars waiting to drop off their car as well. After 10 minutes, an attendant came out and said they wouldn’t open until 6 a.m. Too bad our flight left in less than an hour. We managed to drop off our car and arrive at the ticketing gate. Marie and I were on the same flight. As we attempted to check in, we realized that our flight had been cancelled due to a mechanical problem. The flight attendant told us we could head over to another airline counter and they would get us on their flight. We waited in line for 20 minutes and got up to the front.

As we approached the counter, the supervisor came off her break and told us that she would no longer let us change flights. Let’s just say we weren’t too happy. Marie ran over to our original airline and they said the plane was fixed and we could take that flight. You’d think that would be the end of our nightmare…nope.

We arrived into Atlanta to connect to our final flight. When we got off the flight we realized that we had to cross from one side of the Atlanta airport to the other in less than 5 minutes. I told Marie we would have to run to get there. Poor Marie had flip-flops on and we were both carrying bags. We started running. I took off with Marie running right behind me. After running for a few minutes, I heard Marie yell “David! David!” Marie was having a hard time running with her flip-flops and carrying the bag at the same time. I grabbed both bags and then we started running again. Here I was running with two bags and Marie with flip-flops. We made the gate just in time to get in line behind the last boarding passenger. I bet the passengers next to us were happy when we sat down and they realized we were in a full out sweat! You’d think that would be the end right…not yet.

When we arrived in Salt Lake, Marie had to wait for 30 minutes to get her luggage. I couldn’t find my car for 20 minutes. We can’t wait for Charlotte this year! What else could happen?

From Mike:
Well…after landing in St. Louis for one of our 2006 conventions, my manager, David, nominated me as the official automobile navigator. I reviewed three different maps outlining the “shortest” route as we traveled over numerous interstates.

We arrived at our destination and after three days our show ended successfully. At that point some members of our team needed a ride to the airport so I volunteered to take them. I dropped them off and headed back to meet the rest of our team.

While driving I noticed the landscape around me did not look very familiar. No sooner did I get a call from David asking if I was all right. I said, “Sure dude, I’m almost there.” I glanced at the next road sign and realized I was getting very close to Chicago and further away from St. Louis. So, I took the next exit, got directions from a very nice gas station attendant and made it just in time for dinner with the team.

You can imagine the humor my little adventure caused. Currently, my navigator status has been revoked until further notice. I feel very confident I can re-gain my title in the upcoming 2007 show year.

From Micaela and Michelle:
Does anyone know how to transport Salsa?

During our San Antonio convention in 2004, I invited some of the team to one of my favorite local restaurants. This place has the best chips and salsa in the world (and I should know since I’m the undisputed Chips and Salsa Queen!) Everyone loved the food and they all agreed the chips and salsa were the hit of the evening. In fact, Michelle still talks about it to this day!

Some months later, I wanted to surprise the team and especially Michelle, with chips and salsa to munch on during set up day at our CKC-Manchester convention. I carefully packed and hand carried the chips and salsa on the plane all the way from Texas to New Hampshire. I couldn’t wait to see the expression of sheer joy and delight in their faces when I revealed my “Salsa Surprise.” Little did I know, that I would be the one getting the surprise. When I unwrapped the salsa, it was bubbling and foaming inside the jar! It made a faint crackling sound. It had begun to ferment!! Later we were told that it was because of the shaking motion of the airplane.

Well, even though the salsa was inedible, the chips were still fabulous and we munched away on them all weekend. I can’t tell you how many times people would grab a handful of chips then say, “Hey, where’s the salsa?” I’m determined to bring some of this great salsa to the team, especially Michelle! So if you can help me figure how to get it to the show, you can stop by for a tasty treat!
Stay tuned tomorrow to hear travel stories from CKU!

The Joys of Traveling!

January 24th, 2007

From Stephanie

I was on my way to CKU-Houston.  I arrived from what I thought was early enough at the SLC airport.  The lines for security were so long and I panicked because I knew that I was going to miss my flight.  I was told if I went over to the international terminal I would have a better chance of getting through the lines faster.  So, as I was running through the airport with my rolling computer bag, the bag clipped the back of my heel and I tripped and slid across the floor.  Of course my purse had to be open so everything in there went flying across the floor.  I was mortified.  I looked up and saw a few people chuckling.  I just hurried and picked up my stuff and ran off.  The joys of traveling!

More Travel Joy!

January 24th, 2007

So, continuing on with the travel stories. Here’s a couple of CKU ones.

From Brooke & Emily

It’s always a little bit hectic when you travel, and it’s even worse if you’re like me and always seem to be running late! We were heading to the Memory Trends Conference in Las Vegas last October. Emily and I were on a 7:30 a.m. flight and left bright and early so we would have plenty of time to catch it…or so we thought. We got checked in and headed over to the security line which wrapped back and forth several times and stretched clear down the terminal. By the time we got through security, it was about 7:20 and our flight was boarding. We started toward our gate and realized that, just our luck, it was at the very end of the terminal. We took off running (in our hot pink CKU shirts, by the way) through the upper part of the terminal, down an escalator, and all the way to the very last gate. We barely made it and were the last two people on the plane.

Later that night, we were catching a cab from the conference center to our hotel. We were outside the Venetian and had to wait in line for our turn to get a cab. When we finally got one, our cab driver was in such a hurry that he started driving before we even shut our doors. As he went to pull out of the hotel, traffic on the strip was so backed up that even though we had a green light, there were so many cars blocking the way, we couldn’t go. Out of nowhere he pulled out and started driving down the wrong side of the road, weaving through the oncoming cars. We were both sitting there fearing for our lives, when he saw an opening to get back on the right side of the road. He floored it and sped through the opening. I slammed into the door and Emily slid clear across the seat into me. Luckily it was a short drive to our hotel and we both hoped that our trip home would be a little easier.

From TyAnna

It was my very first time traveling with the Events department to CKU-Kansas City in 2005.  I had only been working here a few months.  Our flight was scheduled to leave at 8 a.m. and I was so excited to finally be able to go to an event.  I had set my alarm for 5:30 a.m. that night before we left—just to make sure I could be to the airport in plenty of time.  I stayed up so late checking and re-checking everything on my list that I didn’t actually roll into bed until 12:30 a.m.…  The morning time came and I woke up on my own….no alarm….oddly, I felt rested.I shot up as fast as I could to look at the time; it was 7:30 a.m.! I started to freak out because I set the alarm myself.  I picked up the alarm and checked for any broken pieces or any missing parts.  No, it was fine. Checking the alarm time again, I realized that I had set the alarm for 5:30 p.m.—not a.m…  Whoops!  I missed my first flight.

It’s Lisa’s Birthday!!

January 26th, 2007

Happy birthday Lisa!! As members of the events team we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Lisa on a regular basis. She is an amazing person and does so much for our team. Who could forget these fabulous Lisa moments: leg wrestling in the middle of dinner at CKU, getting tied up by a bandit in Houston, or driving overnight from NYC to Buffalo with total strangers because of a cancelled flight. How about when the power went out in Valley Forge and Lisa stood out in the heat, passed out water bottles, signed books, and visited with attendees. Our events wouldn’t be the same without her!

Happy Birthday Lisa we love you and hope you have a fabulous day!

This just in!

January 29th, 2007

Don’t know if you noticed. Lisa Bearnson is going to Ft. Lauderdale and Phoenix. Stacy Julian just confirmed too! She will be in Buffalo. Becky Higgins should have her locations in soon.

Plus, we’ll be giving out a CKU tuition to some lucky person at CKC-Nashville. Be sure to pre-register online to be eligible. This may be your only chance to win a tuition, not to mention CKU will be in Nashville a few months later.

Finally, stay tuned to our blog to see who else we met with and the new products we found at CHA!

CM Visit; CHA Day One

January 30th, 2007

Just last week Paula, Dave and Adi met with Creative Memories. They had the opportunity to meet Tammy Moore, CM’s Product Market Manager and Kathy Winscher, Director of Consultant programs for CM. When Paula took this picture with Tammy and Kathy it was 20 degrees outside. Note that Tammy and Kathy are fine with the cold but Paula has her trusty coat “big gray.”

Here is a picture of Adi and Dave with Tammy and Kathy. Nice suits!

We thought we would post a few pictures from our first day at CHA. Here is Heidi and Emily at their booth. We love the color pink!

We also had the chance to meet the group from Two Peas. Here’s a picture of Two Peas and us at the booth.

We can’t forget Doug on our first day! Here is a picture of the cardstock king with Micaela.

We saw chocolate and had to stop by. We realized it was Rusty Pickle and it became sweeter! Here is Lance from Rusty Pickle.

Last but not least from our first slew of photos is Jack from Creative Imaginations. We snapped a photo of him just as he was telling us about his hot new products.
